Just take your time and experiment and have fun with it, and you'll find you can make some really great stuff. In fact the crafting system is known to be the easiest way to break any Star Ocean game, especially in Star Ocean 1/2/3. For example you can use the Customization crafting to make really great weapons and armor way before you normally would be able to have them. So leveling them up early on is a really good way of becoming stronger without any grinding.Īnother way is to use the crafting system, the game has so many different crafting mechanics to use. Each skill you put points in will increase different stats, so there are skills that will boost your HP by 100 for each level up for example, other will increase STR/INT/etc. Another thing might be is that you're not taking advantage of the skills system. That's because the game is somewhat open-world, where you can access places that you're not going to actually visit in the story until way later. So don't worry about missing characters, that's part of the game.Īlso is there anything to be done about the rollercoaster difficulty? I remember some areas having random encounters that were genuinely hard while the next area would be as easy as a tutorial would be. A good chunk of the characters that join your party in this game will only join if you didn't take one of the other characters with you. One of the main elements of the game is choices that matter, which makes replaying the game more than worth it. You didn't miss out on anything, because there is no way to get all characters to start with. I didn't know the game had missable characters and certain actions locked you out of some characters so I ended up getting locked out of some. Let me explain why by addressing your points one by one.

That said, I personally would say that for your first playthrough of Star Ocean 1 R, to not use a guide. Every person has their own way of having fun, and that's the whole point of playing a game. Is one version considered vastly superior to the other? This is outside of price because I'm sure neither is going to be cheap.Īs usual, let me start by saying that you should play the game however you want, if using a guide is how you enjoy playing the game, that's great, if you don't like using a guide that's also great.

There was a PSP version that only released physically as well as the original PS1 version. Lastly, I'll probably move to Star Ocean 2 even if I don't finish 1 since I've heard it's okay to play without having played 1. Is there a skill or character that eases this up? If not it's fine I can deal with it, but it felt jarring at times. I felt like EXP gains weren't properly balanced either so it was tough to settle on a grinding spot to ease the difficulty up.

Should I use a guide or just force myself to wing it and hope it works out?Īlso is there anything to be done about the rollercoaster difficulty? I remember some areas having random encounters that were genuinely hard while the next area would be as easy as a tutorial would be.
#Star ocean first departure r walkthrough series
I'm thinking of playing through the whole series now and want to make sure I avoid feeling like I made a bad decision with recruiting characters. That was pretty discouraging so I put it down. I picked the game up around launch and played for about 5-10 hours before putting it down.
